KEY SHOW FACTS FROM THE ROYAL SHOW 2008

The 160th and final Royal Show
 
Since the Royal Show began in 1839, there have been 159 Shows.  This year’s Royal Show is the 160th.
 
From 1839-1962 inclusive, they moved from place to place each year but thereafter they have all been held at Stoneleigh Park which is the home of the Royal Agricultural Society of England.
 
Royal Shows were not held in the following years:

  • 1866 – cancelled because of cattle plague.
  • 1917-1918 (inclusive) – World War 1.
  • 1940-1946 (inclusive) – World War 2
  • 2001 – cancelled because of Foot & Mouth Disease.
     

The Royal Show is the UK’s leading agricultural show, attracting over 100,000 visitors:
  • 85% Rurally connected visitors
  • 47% Key decision makers
  • At show spending power in excess of £21.2 million
  • 9 out 10 visitors are repeat visitors to the show
  • Over 800 trade and feature exhibitors
  • 5000 school children visited all part of organised parties and voted the Education Trail and Children's Farmyard a huge success.
  • 3500 Livestock entries
  • 2700 Equine entries - from the biggest working animals to the smallest children's pony and included some of the nation's best showing prospects in international qualifying competition.
